New User Feedback

Hi all!

New Orca user here, I took the decision to use Orca as the main plotter behind the helm on our new sailboat. Our setup includes a Core 2 and a Display 2 :

The boat has just launched and we haven’t had a chance to do sea trials yet, so most of my feedback is based on using Orca on other sailboats, and the experience of installing the system on this new boat.

All in all, I really like Orca. It brings back memories of the arrival of Google Maps on mobile phones for car navigation, which made the old Garmin or Tomtom car GPS navigators obsolete overnight

On the UX front, here are a few things that were a bit disconcerting for a new user. I got the same feedback from other crew who interacted with Orca for the first time, so I hope this is valuable to share here:

Map:

  • On the map, markers are pretty small, and are really not easy to see when glancing rapidly at the map, especially if your close vision is not great. It would be really good to have an option to display larger markers, if only for better accessibility for the older user population
  • In the same vein, while I really like the look and feel of the default color scheme, it is very soft, and while navigating having an option for a higher contrast scheme would be super useful. If you look at other mapping systems, including aviation, higher contrast is pretty useful, including for safety. If the app supported a couple of color themes that include a higher contrast option, that would be a great improvement.
  • Why can’t we get more information when clicking/pressing a buoy/marker ? Maps usually contain quite a bit of info for those, it would be good to have a way to display it.
  • MacOS: 2-finger zoom on the trackpad is a bit all over the place, the map often jumps unexpectedly when using it.

Favorites and waypoints:

  • It would be great to be able to favorite an existing map marker in the spots, right now I need to create my own spots next to existing map markers if I want to keep track of them.
  • Can we pick our own colors for Spots ? Preferably in a palette that does not overlap with markers or other map elements.
  • Can we get a quick button to swap the start/end of navigation in the “Navigate to” screen?

I’ll stop here, please let me know if this feedback is useful - I am looking forward to navigating with Orca in the next couple of months, and will make sure to share my experience here!

A great list of suggestions! My thoughts:

  • Larger markers would be great. I struggle to see the difference between a north cardinal and a south cardinal for example.
  • Buoy/marker info: I think most of it is now displayed on the chart without needing a button press (i.e. light sequence and name). What info are you looking for? My bugbear is that you can’t search on the names of markers. Lots of pilot books refer to buoy names and it drives me nuts that I can’t search for them!
  • 2-finger zoom on D2 and iOS also go wonky sometimes.
  • Colours for spots: yes agree, and a wider range of symbols would also be very helpful
