Precision/source of currents/tides

I was looking at currents in some of very tidal areas of Brittany, where currents routinely get above 5knts in the middle of the tide - raz de Sein, Chenal du four, passage du Fromveur - and Orca seems to be understating current a great deal in those areas.

Am I doing something wrong? It would be safer to avoid displaying anything than giving very wrong values…

Hi
Yes I find the Orca tides and currents to be very inaccurate- as you say no information would be better than wrong information!

If looks like Orca is using fairly rough global models for their currents, so they cannot be accurate at small scale unfortunately.

There is reliable open source official data available out there though, it would be great if they could leverage it whenever they can…

Example: Courants de marée 2D

Even more sources are - freely - available in Europe that would easily improve current visualization, like the Copernicus system: LuckGrib . Luckgrib (amazing software btw) has a really good list of available reliable sources, it would be really good if Orca could use those.

Thanks for the suggestions about the currents sources. I’m logging this internally, we will look into it and see how we can improve our currents / tides sources.
